Warren joins The Association of James Braid Courses

Monday 23rd January

As many of you are aware, The Warren was partly designed by James Braid and, as such, we have accepted an invitation to join The Association of James Braid Courses.

This means that we have reciprocal arrangements in place with the other 150 members, as all members can play each other’s courses simply for the cost of a member's guest's green fee.

Many of the courses are a good distance away, however there are six in the West Country which may be of interest to members:

St Enedoc
Weymouth
Yelverton
St Austell
Perranporth
and Sherbourne

FORCE Charity Golf Day

Saturday 22nd October

A full field of 34 teams of four players took part, in testing conditions.

The winning team was: Heath McDonald, John Winter, Mark Heaver and Darren Ware, who scored 80 points. Second Place went to Paul & Lee Fryatt, Curtis Penaligon and Dave Chappell (78pts) and in third place were Nick Wilden, Pete Griffin, Rob Oates and Simon Carr (77pts).

The success of the day was due, in no small part, to the support of 15 South West Golf Clubs who donated complimentary fourball vouchers for prizes together with local pubs and businesses who donated vouchers and services for raffle prizes.
Their support enabled approximately £2,000 to be raised for FORCE which is an excellent, local cancer charity.

Finals Day

Sunday 23rd October On Sunday the finals of the summer knockout competitions were held in sunny but extremely windy conditions. The results of these competitions were as follows:
  • Pring Salver: winner David Chappell runner up Nigel Old
  • Captain's Prize: winner Lee Fryatt runner up Matt Stone
  • Paige Cup: winners John Stokes and Joanne Stokes runners up Mike Dyer and Jean Dyer

Khadaroo and Morris win Harmsworth Cup

The Harmsworth Cup was contested at The Warren Golf Club on Saturday and, helped by superb greens, Saleem Khadaroo and Pete Morris returned a fantastic better ball score of 60 to win.

Alan Hough and Ollie Cowl came in one shot behind, to finish in second place. Luke Ebdon and Alec Williams were one shot further back, in third.

Reciprocal Arrangement

Thursday 8th September

Wells Golf Club have become the latest addition to our reciprocal green fee arrangement, bringing the total to eight.

We look forward to welcoming Wells members to play on our course. We also look forward to playing at Wells GC, yet another great course in our scheme.

Membership of The Warren gets better and better.

See all eight participating clubs on our Special Offers page.

Warren Seagull

Sunday 4th September

The Warren Seagull open event was held in strong south-westerlies, on Sunday.

In, arguably, the toughest format of foursomes medal (alternate shots) and in high winds, Adrian Mountford & Eddie Campbell were the only pairing to get under par, with an inspiring net 67. Congratulations to Adrian & Eddie, who get their names immortalised on the board, in the clubhouse.

Second, were Marcus Dove & Carl Kinson, whose net 69 pipped Graham Lucas & Mick Malone with a better back nine.

Well done, also, to Cavan & Yvette Harker, who won the Best Mixed category, with net 71.

48 points wins Wednesday Stableford!

Well done Chris Tancock, who gets severely chopped to the tune of 5 shots, after shooting 83 gross off a 26 handicap! His remarkable round saw the 14 year-old score on every hole.

His nearest rivals, Richard Cousins (Div 1 winner) & Simon Rogers, were left for dust - nine points behind, with 39.

Winter League Starts in November

The new Winter League will comprise teams of four. If you have 3 buddies you want to play with, enter a whole team. Otherwise, let Jamie Nickles (Vice Captain) pick for you.

The matches will be played in two matchplay formats: Foursomes and Four Ball Better Ball.

All levels/ages of players are invited to play and the teams can be ladies/gents/mixed. Inactive handicaps will be allowed although, as always, players are encouraged to play at least three qualifying competitions per year, to keep their handicaps current.

Between 5th Nov & 18th March inclusive, eight weekends will be designated as match weekends.

Cups and prizes will be awarded at the end.

This competition is new to The Warren & is still in development. There has been much interest shown on the noticeboard and looks like being a lot of fun. Don't miss out on the opportunity to show off your matchplay skills. Enter your name/s on the noticeboard in the hallway, next time you're there.

Rules will follow soon.

Greek Evening, Saturday 22nd October

Come along and sample Chef George's huge variety of great greek food.

There will be music, also. Watch this space for further details.

Home defeat for the Warren

SDL Warren 2 Teignmouth 5
20th August 2011

Since our away defeat at Teignmouth G.C., we were looking forward to revenge in the home leg. Yet again though, Teignmouth fielded a very strong team, which defeated four of our seven pairs and halved two matches, to win 5-2 on our very own turf.
Well done to the in-form pairing of Heath Mcdonald and Paul Fryatt, who produced the only positive result of the day 4&3 and won the Captain's win-pool of £7 each.

Look on the notice board, for the upcoming Winter League starting in November. The two formats of the League will mirror the better-ball of SDL and foursomes of Palairet.

Victory Bowl defeat for the Warren

13th August 2011

The Victory Bowl is an annual competition played between the Warren Golf Club and Exeter Golf and Country Club, on a home and away basis and dates back to 1945, when the cup was donated to celebrate the end of the 2nd World War.

On Saturday, Exeter visited the Warren holding a healthy 4 ½ to ½ lead from the first leg.
In a tightly fought match a strong Exeter team won by 3 matches to 2 (overall score of 7 ½ to 2 ½ ), taking the cup away from the Warren for the first time in four years.

This was the start of a very good weekend for Exeter as one of their juniors, Harrison Greenberry, won the British Boys Amateur Championship on Sunday. He joins an elite group of former champions that includes Michael Bonallack, Mark Mouland, Ronan Rafferty, Jose-Maria Olazabal, David Howell, Sergio Garcia and Tom Lewis.

Liam is Junior Club Champion

29th July 2011

Liam Brooks receives Junior Club Champion's trophy from Club Captain, Mike Dyer.
Picture: Mike Dyer, Club Captain presents the trophy to new Junior Club Champion, Liam Brooks.

Playing in great conditions on fast, true-running links greens, Liam Brooks (pictured) returned a highly creditable 81 gross to win the championship, from Chris Tancock in second.

Winter Membership extended for 2011/2012

2nd August 2011

It's probably the last thing that anyone wants to talk about when the weather is warm, but the unique nature of our course means that it is an ideal venue for winter golf.
We are very pleased to announce that our Winter Membership Scheme will be extended for another year, thus enabling golfers from other clubs to enjoy this truly great course through the winter months.

A special Winter Membership Open Day will be held on Saturday 10th September when enrolment will be possible. Come along and meet some members of our happy club.

Free Golf Academy open to non-members!

2nd August 2011

Youngsters up to the age of 12 and related to adult members are able to play golf at the Warren free of charge.

Additionally, following the recent success of our Junior Golf Academy on Thursday evenings (from 5.30pm), we're happily extending the Academy, to include prospective adult members. This is with immediate effect.
  • No clubs needed - Darren will lend you all the required equipment, if needed.

  • Get out on the course with our PGA Pro Darren and learn new skills, or hone existing ones.

  • Use the Academy to try golf, for free.

  • Meet and chat with new golfers & existing members.

  • Use the Academy to experience The Warren for free, before committing to membership.

  • What better way to see a links golf course, for the first time, than with a professional golfer.

  • You have nothing to lose, other than a couple of hours on a Thursday evening.

  • It might be fun!

For more details or to book your free place, please call 01626 862255. (Press 1 for Pro Shop, or 2 for Office).

Wednesday Stableford

27th July 2011
CSS:69

This week's Stableford roll-up saw some great golf, slightly favouring the division 2 players.

Marcus Dove beat par (gross) by a stroke although he will, no doubt, regret the dropped shots on 17 & 18.

Brian Bradford's 44 points would have usually won any competition but were eclipsed by Malcolm Talbot's 46!

Malcolm carded 4 birdies and, amazingly, a blob on the 18th!
After a little judicious pruning, Malcolm will play off a brand new handicap of 13.

9 holes, 2 flags... You decide.

25th July 2011

Following the success of the Warren's version of Powerplay golf on Captain's Day, Warren G.C. has registered and become an official Powerplay Golf site.
We intend to run a series of Power Play competitions through the winter months, open to Warren members and other clubs. We can, of course, do this at the Warren simply because our greens remain in play almost throughout the whole of winter.

Membership of The Warren just gets better and better.

More details to follow.

Strong north easterly winds fool most players

Professional's Day
Saturday 23rd July

Paul & Lee Fryatt & Chris Davey netted 57.0, beating their nearest rivals by 2.1 strokes, yesterday.

The 2nd placed team of: Simon Carr, Pete Morris & Ian McGill were followed by Matt & Mark Commins & Mark Crocker, in 3rd.

The course is in great condition after the recent rainy spells but, despite the beautiful sunshine, the winds from the estuary side force scores upwards.

Thanks to our PGA Professional Darren Prowse, for a great fun day.
