JUNE
Week
ending 13th June
The Colonel Creasy Salver saw
players from far and wide take on the challenge that theWarren can set. With a full field and a
testing but changing wind, 28 teams of 3 took on the 36 hole medal event playing
for the prestigious Salver.
The morning scores took on a
safe looking approach; however it was all very good with only two teams over
par for the morning and Messrs Harding, Wilson,
and Watson leading the halfway stage by one shot from a trio of teams.
The afternoon round albeit
now in a stronger and different wind direction did not deter the good scoring
of the morning round, in fact the scoring was better with all teams shooting
under par. Two rounds of a 7 under par 62 and a total of 124 was good enough
for the team from Okehampton, Paul Skidmore, John Rattenbury and Richard Reid
to lift the Salver at the end of a gruelling 36 holes. The runner up spot was
taken by Warren members Marcus Dove, Carl Kinson and Will Thorne who added their blistering afternoon
61 to their AM 64 for a total of 125. Third place was awarded to father and son
Ian & Chris McGill and partner Dave Dimond who also finished on 125.

Spare a thought however for
club Captain Dave Cann who swears he did not leave his electric trolley
switched on at the 14th hole, it decided on its own accord to drive
itself, clubs and all, into the greenside pond. Luckily there was only a foot
or so of water in the pond which made salvaging it the more easier.
In the domestic competitions
last week Martin Hitchcock had a resounding victory with 45 points in Division
1 of the Wednesday stableford, with Liam Brooks taking Division 2 on countback
with 43 points.
On Thursday the ladies played
the Chenery Salver which is a par format. Pam Stanaway was the clear winner
with a score of +2 with Gina Redman taking 2nd place with 0.
Week
ending 20th June
Captain’s day was a total mystery to all who took part in it
because nobody knew who their respective partners were. The format was a drawn
team event with the teams being drawn after play. Golfers were confronted with
a prize on every hole, either a nearest the pin or longest drive, with a couple
of holes with an extra pin position added to provide some entertainment on the
putting green. Needless to say that these pins were placed in nearly impossible
positions with the speed of the greens, but never the less, proved to be very
entertaining for a vast majority of the players, 4 and 5 putting being the
norm. With the tricky pins and a beer tent blocking the route to the 11th
tee, players still managed to get around in comfortable times.
With the competition complete the teams were drawn and after
what seemed to be hours of adding up and taking away the results were decided
and prizes were given out in a lengthy presentation with 26 prizes on offer.
The victors on the day were Ladies Vice Captain Alison Marsh
and husband Howard, Mike Jolly and Barry Pomeroy with an accumulated score of
108, six points clear of 2nd place Paul Arpino, Ian McGill, G Graham
and R Hammett. The best ladies score went to Mo Norrish and partner Sarah
Thomas, with husband and wife Eric and Marion Tose winning the mixed section.

After the presentation, there followed a night of
entertainment including a steel band, a 40 prize draw and a silent auction.
Club Captain, Dave Cann thanked all those that attended the day which raised
over a £1000 for local charities.
JULY
Week
ending 4th July 2010
With the dry spell continuing the Warren is playing to its true links style
with balls bouncing at strange angles and the greens running at their
‘lightning’ best, making even a two putt tricky. However, the game still
requires that little element of luck. Saturday saw the members playing a medal
for the Kerswell Cup and the luck gods certainly shone on Adrian Henley. Adrian
bogeyed the first, thought he’d lost his ball on the second after playing two
provisional balls but found it, and on the last thought he had gone out of
bounds, but the ball was a foot inside and made par to give him a net 63 and a
one shot lead from Luke Ebdon who was already in the clubhouse with net 64.
Third place was decided on countback with Chris Davey having the better back
nine with a net 66 over Neil Allum.
On Tuesday the vets held a medal and saw Geoff Aylett win
Division 1 with a net 63 from Roy Gibson on 65. In Division 2 Geoff Graham won
with a net 64 one shot clear of Andy Gorman.
In the Wednesday Stableford, on form Wayne Chant took
Division 1 with an excellent 40 points and Division 2 was won by Trevor Pugsley
with 37 points.
On Thursday the ladies held the Centenary Trophy. Played as
a bogey competition it proved hard going for most players but saw some good
scoring from a few. None better though than Gina Redman who took first place
with +2 from Pat Harker who finished level.
