The match itself was played in a great spirit which belied the intense desire of both players to win. James Allum had the better of the early exchanges but a hole out from just off the 4th green for birdie from Ben Sclater levelled things.
It was nip and tuck until the middle of the back 9 where Ben eased ahead with back to back birdies. Putts from range came easily to both players on greens that were running smooth and true. Despite a chip in on at 15 from James, Ben was able to close out the match on 16 with a solid 7 iron to the back fringe 20 feet behind the pin. Ben Sclater dedicated his win to his fiancé Natalie, Ollie and his Mum Anna who sadly passed in 1998.
“I have had some great matches in this competition, against some class players, Tim Aggett, McGill, Ed Poultney & James Allum! These are all brilliant golfers and I feel very fortunate to have got past them this year to win. It just shows that the great course we have continues to attract really good golfers!”
