LADIES CENTENARY 1909-2009

Ladies have been playing golf at Dawlish Warren for 100 years, and the Ladies Section is in the middle of the Centenary Celebration Month for the members and invited guests, which is being hosted by the Ladies’ Captain, Gina Redman, and the Vice Captain, Jan Foster. Ladies golf is thriving at the club. The competition day each week is Thursday, and a varied programme of events is offered throughout the year. There are also many other opportunities to play this fine links course. Members enjoy informal roll-up mornings, mixed competitions, and inter-club matches which generally involve a sociable meal after the match.

A great advantage of Warren membership is that, apart from fixed tee times for matches and competitions which are posted in advance on the club programme of events, members may use the course whenever they please. Many take advantage of a fine morning or an early evening round of golf in the summer, with no advance tee booking necessary – a luxury not always possible at other local clubs. At such quiet times, on some of the best greens in the county, golf at the Warren is truly ‘Millionaires Golf’. Ladies – why not take advantage of your County Card this summer, and come for a round of golf at The Warren? You can be assured of a warm welcome at this well-run, friendly club.

For over one hundred years, players of all abilities have enjoyed the challenge of links golf in this uniquely beautiful place. Founded by the Earls of Devon in 1892 and situated on a sand spit that separates the Exe estuary from the sea, our largely level, eighteen hole, duneland course offers views of sea, estuary and rolling hills. Equidistant between the historic cathedral city of Exeter (12 miles), Torquay, and the market town of Newton Abbot, the course can be easily reached by car (on course parking), by rail (Dawlish Warren station 100 yards from the first tee) and by a regular and frequent bus service. A benign micro climate and our sandy soil usually enable us to enjoy golf for 365 days a year.  We almost never close!

“The Warren Golf Club is a good challenge to golfers of all standards who
appreciate quality greens” (Over 80% of customer feedback)

Course (Click on the heading for more details)
The Warren is a traditional links course of 5968 yards, designed in its present form by James Braid and playing to a par of 69. The fairways are natural, unspoilt duneland turf on the seaward side, with lusher grasses on the estuary side. Banks of heather, small copses, drifts of gorse, ponds, banks and ditches add to the challenge of the course. Our greens are acknowledged as being as fine as any in the South West: fast, fair and true.

However, The Warren is more than just a golf course; it is a site of special scientific interest and a truly precious place. It is home to rare orchids, plants and grasses, including the unique Warren Crocus. The Warren is a stopover for huge flocks of migratory birds and wildfowl. Birdlife is rich and exotic whatever the season. Stoats, foxes, birds of prey and rabbits exist in delicate equilibrium. Happily, golf benefits this unique ecology which is further protected by the stewardship of Natural England.
